What is Lactic Acid in skincare?

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) used in skincare products for its exfoliating and moisturising properties.

Here are some of the key benefits of lactic acid in skincare:

1. Exfoliation: Lactic acid helps to slough off dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, revealing fresher, smoother skin underneath. This can lead to an improved skin texture and a brighter, more radiant complexion.

2. Moisturisation: Unlike some other AHAs, lactic acid also has moisturising properties. It helps to increase the skin's hydration levels by stimulating the skin's natural production of hyaluronic acid, a substance known for its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

3. Anti-Aging: By promoting cell turnover, lactic acid can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It may also help to stimulate collagen production, which can lead to firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

4. Hyperpigmentation: Regular use of lactic acid can help to fade hyperpigmentation, such as age spots or dark spots left behind by acne. It does this by accelerating the skin's natural shedding process, which can help to even out skin tone over time.

5. Acne: Lactic acid can also be beneficial for those with acne-prone skin, as it can help to unblock pores and reduce the occurrence of breakouts.

Despite these benefits, it's important to use lactic acid (and all AHAs) with caution. These ingredients can make the skin more sensitive to the sun, so it's recommended to use a sunscreen during the day when using products containing AHAs. Also, it's a good idea to start with a lower concentration of lactic acid and gradually build up to prevent skin irritation.
At KLYNIK we recommend the NOON Aesthetics Lacto-10 with DermShield which is a one-of-a-kind cream that provides very fast skin rejuvenation and hydration. The additive DermShield, with a high concentration of Lactic Acid (pH 3.5), allows the use of the cream with all skin types, throughout the seasons and without causing irritation or a dry feeling. Lacto-10 can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
